Box Score
ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team used a high-pressure offense to land a 3-0 victory over visiting Northland College on Saturday afternoon. Three different Eagles got on the board in the contest which saw Northwestern own a 32-3 shot advantage.
Northwestern wasted no time putting pressure on its opponent, forcing its first shot just 2:57 into the contest. The Eagles would continue to hold the reigns in terms of momentum, putting up a total of 22 shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
Just after the clocked had ticked 24:00,
Joshua Fryc (Harris, Minn./Homeschool) dribbled the ball in and placed it over the goalkeeper to secure his team's first goal of the contest. UNW continued to force attempts towards the Northland goal, but the defensive effort withstood any more scoring for the half.
Queue the beginning of the second period and
Joshua Wright (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) made his presence known quickly as he notched his first goal of the season, appropriately enough, on senior day. The score came just 1:12 into the second period and continued to add to the building Northwestern force.
The Eagles continued to remain on the offense and would find the back of the net one more time at the 58:58 point. This time,
Eric Fast (Eagan, Minn./Homeschool) and
Caleb Ginos (Walker, Minn./Walker Hackensack Akeley) worked together to find
Sean Taylor (Sydney, Australia /Kenosha Christian Life ) who became the third UNW player to score on the afternoon.
The LumberJacks refused to roll over and continued to battle, but more Eagle pressure on the offensive end of the field held off any scores from the visiting team on the scoreboard.
As the time hit zeroes, UNW had earned its seventh conference victory of the season as a result of its play on the field.
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) and his defensive crew picked up the shutout victory amidst no Northland shots on goal.
After the busy weekend that saw Northwestern (7-9-0 overall, 7-3-0 conference) go 1-1, the team will have some time to head back to the practice field before the next Purple and Gold contest. The UNW players will next lace up their cleats for game day on Friday, October 25 in Mankato, Minn. for a matchup with Bethany Lutheran College. A 3:15 p.m. start time is slated for the second round of 2013 action between the two teams.
