EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Northwestern volleyball team split its Saturday matches at the Sandy Schumaker Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Eagles lost to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-13) before finishing the day with a 3-2 win (23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11) over the host-Blugolds from Eau Claire.
Northwestern's bout against the Pointers was the third time this season the two teams met, with Stevens Point taking all three matches. The Eagles hit .116 in the four-set match, but couldn't keep up with the Pointers' .280 attacking rate and 55 kills.
Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) was the only UNW player to record double-digit kills at 13 as the junior posted a personal attacking rate of .450. Miller added four blocks on defense as the Eagles recorded 10 blocks as a team.
Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had 38 of Northwestern's 40 assists in the 12 p.m. match with
Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) tallying 19 digs to lead the Eagles.
Emma Brunkhorst had 15 kills for the Pointers, who improved to 19-4 on the season. Stevens Point received 66 votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll, the highest number to not make it into the list of 25 (making the Pointers No. 26).
Northwestern rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to win Sets 3, 4 and 5 against Eau Claire to close out the day on a positive note. Three of the five sets ended in 25-23 fashion, as the Blugolds won the first round 25-23 before UNW took Nos. 3 and 4 by the same margin.
The attacking rate still wasn't very high for Northwestern, but the Eagles' 13.5 blocks helped carry the team past a now-13-13 Eau Claire squad. Miller had five of those blocks, while Lyida Palkert got her hands in on six, with both adding 13 kills.
Kendra Korporal (Sumner, Iowa /Sumner-Fredericksburg) led Northwestern with 14 kills overall as Stoltz got to 50 assists. Meanwihle, Bertsch was solid again in the back row as her defense led to 27 digs.

Northwestern wrapped up its quick weekend away from Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with a 12-11 overall record. Before resuming league play, UNW will get another nonconference match in on Wedbesday at Clareton College in Northfield, Minn. (7 p.m. start). The Eagles will be back in conference action next week when they host Bethany Lutheran College on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played in the Ericksen Center.
