Day 2 at Augsburg Invitational dooms Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Friday's success on the volleyball court for Northwestern College didn't carry over as well as hoped to Saturday's second day of the Augsburg College Invitational as the Eagles dropped a pair of matches to Gustavus Adolphus College and the host-Auggies. NWC tried to play a game of catch-up with the Gusties, losing 16-14 in the fifth set and eventually ran out of gas in the final match of the day, slipping to 6-3 on the season in the process.

Against Gustavus, the Eagles lost 25-23 and 25-21 in Sets 1 and 2 before posting 11- and nine-point victories in the third and fourth set to force a match-deciding fifth set that went into overtime. Despite losing the match, Northwestern scored more points throughout the five sets.

Northwestern hit .196 for the match as three players hit double-digit kills. Kendra Korporal (Sumner, Iowa /Sumner-Fredericksburg) finished with 15 kills and Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) and Lizzy Potratz (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian ) each added 14. Miller hit .387 to lead all NWC players as setter Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) amassed 53 assists. Of Northwestern's 85 digs, 20 went to Potratz while Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) led all players on both sides of the court with 28.

NWC's 64 kills as a team was easily more than the Gusties' 46. The same was true on defense, with the Eagles recording 85 digs while Gustavus finished with 58.

Northwestern's fatigue showed as the Augsburg match went on as the Eagles hit progressively worse in each of the four sets, settling for a .121 attacking percentage at the afternoon's conclusion. Korporal upped her kills total from the morning match to 17 against Augsburg to go with a .208 hitting rate, while Potratz added 12 kills to her day's resume. Stoltz, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 42 of the team's 45 assists while Korporal and Potratz each had a team-high 14 digs. Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) had her hands on plenty of balls at the net, finishing with five blocks.

Colleen Ourada led Augsburg with 18 kills.

NWC will go back to the drawing board on Monday after a day of rest to prepare for another weekend tournament, this time hosted in Mount Vernon, Iowa by Cornell College. The Eagles will again play four matches – two on Friday and two on Saturday, with a rematch against the Auggies on a neutral court on Saturday afternoon. Northwestern's first match of the event will take place on Friday afternoon, when the Eagles face yet-another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe in St. Olaf College at 2 p.m.
