Baseball returns from Ashland, Wis. with sweep over Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northwestern College baseball team won its fourth, fifth and sixth games of the week in a three-game sweep over Northland College on Friday and Saturday. With the victories, the Eagles improved to 23-11 overall and 14-3 in UMAC play.

In the first game of the series on Friday, Northwestern out-hit Northland 13-7 en route to a 6-3 win. Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) went 4-5 at the plate, scoring twice in the process while Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) went 3-5. Cory Larson (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) earned a quality start on the mound, throwing six innings but earning a no-decision as the Eagles and LumberJacks were tied 3-3 when Josh Balzer (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) entered the game in relief. Balzer gave up two hits over three innings as Northwestern posted a three-run eighth inning to take and ultimately keep the lead.

Game 2 of the series, which started at 12 noon on Saturday, resulted in a 4-0 win for the Eagles. Tyler Campion (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian) went all seven innings on the hill, allowing six hits while pitching a shutout. Meanwhile, Northwestern scattered its four runs over three innings. In the batter's box, Cody Kielsa (Howard Lake, Minn./Rogers) was the only NWC player to record a multi-hit game as the junior went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Northland wasn't ready for the Eagles to leave town in the third game of the weekend, as Northwestern and the LumberJacks went 11 innings before one of the teams posted a definitive win. After each team scored a run in their portion of the eighth frame, NWC put up three runs in the top of the 11th inning to virtually end a windy and cool weekend. Monte Abeler (Upsala, Minn./Upsala) finished 3-5 at the plate with two runs scored, while Ethan Nichols (Brainerd, Minn/Brainerd) went 2-5 with two RBI, relieving Andy Haagenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley) at short stop. Despite owning a 13-6 advantage in hits and Northland committing five errors in the game, Northwestern couldn't make its move until the 11th hour.

Andy Peterson (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) went nine innings on the mound, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters. Markwith then came in to pitch the 10th and 11th frames, earning the victory with one hit against him.

Northwestern has four UMAC games left on its 2012 schedule, all of which will take place next week at Reynolds Field. The Eagles will resume their suspended home game against Martin Luther from April 7 on Tuesday afternoon before NWC hosts the College of St. Scholastica on Friday and Saturday.
