Game 2 Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Saturday featured the tale of two games for the Northwestern College softball team, who beat the College of St. Scholastica 4-1 before losing to the Saints 10-2 in the second contest of the doubleheader.

Freshman Molly Johnsen (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood) allowed just three St. Scholastica hits in the first game, shutting down the Saints from the pitcher's circle. Meanwhile, NWC used a three-run third inning to come back from a 1-0 deficit. After a fielding error allowed Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) to get to third base, Johnsen singled to right center field to score the Eagles' first run of the game. Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) followed with a triple to right field to score Johnsen before crossing home plate herself  on another Saints error.

Northwestern added another insurance run in the fifth inning following back-to-back walks to start the frame. Rodgers picked up another RBI as her single up the middle scored Stoltman from second base. Johnsen did the rest on the rubber, striking out a total of 11 batters to ensure the victory for the Eagles.

NWC had five hits in the game, two of which came from Rodgers' bat to go with a pair of RBI for the senior.

Game 2 was a completely different story for the Eagles, as Northwestern was out-hit 9-2 while committing a total of nine defensive errors in seven innings.

St. Scholastica scored two runs immediately in the first inning courtesy of three hits. Things were ok for NWC until the top of the fourth, when the Saints added a run after Molly Jazdzewski hit a leadoff double. Then came a treacherous fifth, when the Eagles added four errors to four hits for St. Scholastica that translated into four runs on the scoreboard for the visitors, two of which came before Northwestern was able to successfully get an out.

CSS added two more runs in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead before the Eagles found some life at the plate in the bottom half of the frame. Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) and Janae Burt (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) recorded back-to-back singles, with Timm scoring on a Johnsen RBI. Ali Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) also scored before the conclusion of the inning.

St. Scholastica added one more run in the seventh to cap off a 10-2 victory for the Saints, while the Eagles (7-13, 2-1 UMAC) headed into the Easter weekend questioning themselves as to what happened.

Timm and Burt had Northwestern's lone hits of the game. Timm and Johnsen shuffled in and out of the pitcher's circle for the Eagles, with Timm tossing a total of six innings and Johnsen one. Timm allowed eight hits and six runs, two of which were earned, while Johnsen yielded one hit and four runs,  none of which went into the book as being earned.

NWC will be back on the field next Monday for practice before heading north to Ashland, Wis. for a doubleheader at Northland College on Tuesday, April 10, with a 3 p.m. first pitch scheduled.
