Softball opens four-game weekend with doubleheader split

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

MANKATO, Minn. – Northwestern College salvaged a split in its Friday afternoon doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran College. The Eagles were blanked 8-0 before turning the tables on the Vikings and winning 6-0.

All eight of Bethany's runs in the first game came in the second inning, when the Vikings teed off on Eagles pitcher Molly Johnsen (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood). Bethany Lutheran tallied seven hits in the inning, and Johnsen would have been out of the frame after two runs, but NWC error allowed the home team to stay alive longer than they deserved, resulting in six unearned scores.

Meanwhile, Northwestern couldn't string anything together in the batter's box. The Eagles finished with just four hits in the abbreviated five-inning game, moving a lone one runner to third base. Anna Schurch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) relieved Johnsen on the rubber, allowing just two hits in two innings of work.

Game 2 was a different story for the Purple and Gold, who used a six-run third inning to win 6-0. Northwestern piled up five hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Walker and a bases-clearing double from Schurch. At the same time, Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) pitched a gem from the circle, allowing four hits over seven innings.

NWC mustered just five hits in the game, but it was enough to bump the Eagles to 13-17 overall (8-5 UMAC). Northwestern will be back on the diamond on Saturday in New Ulm, Minn. as Martin Luther College hosts another UMAC doubleheader with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled.
