ST. PAUL – Northwestern College split its Friday afternoon UMAC doubleheader against the University of Minnesota Morris, losing 3-1 before finishing the day with a lopsided 18-1 win.

In the first game, Northwestern struggled to get hits. The Eagles scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, tying the score at 1-1 at the time on a Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) RBI double that scored Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View). Stoltman led off the inning with a triple down the left field line to put herself in scoring position.

Despite Molly Johnson blazing down the Cougars lineup with strikeout after strikeout, Morris strung together a pair of hits that translated into two runs. Molly Olson doubled to start the frame before advancing to third on a bunt single by Jordan Iverson. Olson crossed home plate on a steal before Iverson scored on Kelsey Draper's RBI groundout.

Johnsen went all seven innings for Northwestern, striking out 10 while allowing five hits. The freshman was charged for all three Morris runs.

The second game of the day was a complete change of pace for the Eagles as they broke open the bats in a 17-run victory. Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) one-hit Morris while Northwestern had 12 hits, scoring nine runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth as the game ended due to a run rule after five innings.

After Morris scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first, NWC answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning. Lauren Walker (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) hit a two-RBI double to center field in the inning, while Timm singled to right field to bring in Walker.

After a scoreless second, the Eagles went off in the third, hitting three extra-base hits while patiently waiting out four walks. Six different NWC players batted twice in the inning while  Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and Erin Kleinjan (Avon, Minn./Holdingford) each had two RBI just in one frame. Northwestern added six more runs in the fourth, going on an RBI spree again with five runs being unearned. By the end of the game, the Eagles had hit five doubles and collected 13 RBI.

Timm struck out four Cougars batters in five innings of work en route to her fourth victory this season.

Now 8-16 overall (3-4 UMAC), Northwestern will be back on its home field again on Saturday afternoon for another UMAC doubleheader, this time against Presentation College. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
