ST. PAUL --
Andy Peterson (Rogers, Minn./Rogers)'s two-run home run gave the Northwestern College baseball team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday. The Eagles scored all three runs on long balls, with
Cody Kielsa (Howard Lake, Minn./Rogers) notching his first home run of the year in the fifth inning.
In addition to a cold, windy and rainy afternoon, Northwestern looked as if it was going to have to battle itself in the early goings. Minnesota Morris scored in the second inning on a ball that got away from
Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) in right field while the Eagles had several gaffes on offense too. In addition to a pickoff, three NWC players were called out on rundowns between bases.
With the Cougars leading 2-0 after three innings, neither team was able to present itself with a scoring opportunity. Kielsa's bomb over the left field fence that barely stayed in fair territory brought the home team within a run at 2-1. Then in the eighth frame,
Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) singled through the left side before earning second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Taylor Kauweloa (Kailua, Hawaii/Damien Memorial). Peterson then stepped to the plate and ripped a Jordan Gegen pitch over the fence in left to give the Eagles the lead.
Corey Larson, who had pitched a strong game for Northwestern all day, came back in to pitch the ninth, giving up two early hits before the Eagles recorded three straight outs to end the game.
Peterson was one of two NWC players to record two hits in the game, with
Monte Abeler (Upsala, Minn./Upsala) also going 2-4 from the batter's box. Larson yielded six hits and two runs, one of which was unearned, while striking out six.
Northwestern, now 14-9 overall and 8-1 in UMAC play, will return to the diamond to face the Cougars in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Game 1 is scheduled for a 12 noon first pitch.
