Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. -- Northwestern College left the south shore of Lake Superior empty handed on Tuesday as the Eagles lost both games of a doubleheader against Northland College. The Eagles surrendered a two-run seventh inning to lost the first contest 6-5 before trailing to the end of a 6-2 score in Game 2.

In the first game, Northwestern scored runs in four of the seven innings, starting with a run in the first frame. With a runner on second base, the Eagles took advantage of a Northland error to be the first team to score. The Eagles added two runs in the third to lead 3-0 after Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron), and Lauren Walker (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) strung together three straight singles. Stoltman scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Janae Burt (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) before another field choice off the bat of Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) scored Sigurdsen.

Northland answered with a four-run third inning that put the LumberJills on the board in a big way. NWC committed three errors in the frame, and two hits contributed to the home team taking a 4-3 advantage after three complete innings.

Northwestern tied and eventually jumped back into the lead with a run in each of the fourth and fifth frames. Burt picked up an RBI with a walk in the fourth to score Stoltman before Timm scored on a Northland error in the fifth.

Timm, who went all game for Northwestern in the pitcher's circle, was cruising until the bottom of the seventh when the LumberJills came from behind for good. Northland earned two straight singles to start the inning before a sacrifice fly and another single ended the game.

Timm allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out five. In the batter's box, Sigurdsen went 3-4 with two runs scored, while Stoltman and Ali Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) each had two hits.

Molly Johnsen (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood) didn't have as much success in the circle in Game 2 as the freshman was hit nine times. Northland scored first with a run in the second inning before adding two more runs in the fourth, courtesy of a Sam Bona leadoff triple. The LumberJills extended their lead to 6-0 with a three-run fifth inning with Northwestern looking for answers.

The Eagles notched a run in the top of the seventh frame, but it wasn't enough in the 6-1 final. Burt picked up the RBI, her third of the day, on a double that scored Stoltman.

Johnsen earned seven strikeouts in the game, but the Eagles were out-hit 9-4 while leaving 10 runners on base. Burt had the Eagles' only multiple hit game, going 2-4 at the plate.

Now 7-15 overall and 2-3 in UMAC competition, Northwestern will return home for scheduled doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Barring any weather issues, the Eagles will welcome the University of Minnesota Morris to Reynolds Field for a 3 p.m. twin bill on Friday before Presentation College comes to town for a DH on Saturday.
