ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's soccer team finished a shutout weekend on Saturday against Martin Luther College, scoring a late goal to win 1-0 over the visiting Knights. The victory concluded a weekend that saw the home team hold their opponents scoreless in games on both Friday and Saturday.
NWC put pressure on the Martin Luther defense throughout the contest, posting a 23-9 advantage in shots throughout the 90 minutes of action. In the first half alone, the Eagles made offensive attacks nine times more than the visitors. Even amidst the pressure, the Knights were able to hold strong on defense as they fended off nine Northwestern scoring opportunities before the teams headed into halftime.
Both teams traded shots as the clocked ticked down, but the defensive play on each end of the field prevented any goals until the 82
nd minute when
Gustavo Aguilar-Castro (San Luis Potosí, Mexico /Eagan) netted his second career goal to provide Northwestern with a 1-0 lead that would last through the remainder of regulation.
With the win,
Eric Bocan (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) picked up his second shutout of the year between the pipes, protecting the goal from all seven of Martin Luther's scoring attempts. NWC has now posted shutouts in seven of the team's nine victories this season.
Looking ahead, Northwestern (9-7-2, 7-3-2 UMAC) will get a week of rest after hosting three matchups in the past five days. The Eagles will lace up their cleats again next Friday, October 26 as they continue their stretch of home games and take on Crown College in a 1 p.m. contest to kick off the final weekend of the regular season. The last time the two teams met was on September 29, when the outcome was a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play.
