Men's soccer earns shutout conference victory

Box Score

ST. PAUL –The Northwestern College men's soccer team got back in the win column after shutting out Bethany Lutheran College in a key conference victory Friday afternoon. The Eagles were even with the visitors in the shots on goal count, but the difference maker was the home team's three goals scored.

NWC first got on the board just 4:18 after the initial whistle, as Sean Taylor (Sydney, Australia /Kenosha Christian Life ) notched his fifth goal of the season providing the team with a one-up advantage that would remain throughout the 90 minutes of play.

Following Taylor's goal, the Eagles were not finished scoring in the first half as Joel Ottley (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) aided Garmina Paygah-Fangiah (Monrovia, Liberia/Coon Rapids ) in doubling the Purple and Gold's lead with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first period of play.

Northwestern's offensive attack did not cease in the second period at Ottley tacked on NWC's third and final goal of the game at the 57:17 mark. As the clock ran out Reynolds Field, the home team on the scoreboard left the field with their sixth shutout of the 2012 campaign.

Even as the Vikings battled the Eagles to an even number of shots on goal, Northwestern outshot the visitors 8-5 on the afternoon, including 4-1 in the first half. Defensively, Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) and his crew picked up 8 saves in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup, earning Coleman his fifth shutout of his sophomore season.

Northwestern improves to 6-3-2 in conference play and 8-7-2 overall after Friday's successful outcome. With just over a week remaining in the regular season, the Eagles are currently in third place among UMAC teams and are fighting to earn a berth into the postseason tournament.

NWC will return to action tomorrow, after a quick night of rest, playing host to Martin Luther College at Mounds View High School in a 12 p.m. matinee contest.
