ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College worked hard and fast in its UMAC-opening match on Friday night, quickly defeating Bethany Lutheran College 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-10). The Eagles hit a season-best .417 while receiving double-digit kill performances from
Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).
NWC was running on all cylinders, pouring on the offense while committing no passing errors and earning 10 blocks on defense. Miller's 12 kills came on 18 attempts (.611) while Koth's offensive marks came on 24 attempts (.458). Both outside hitters committed just one hitting error on the night.
Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) guided the Eagles on offense, claiming 35 of the team's 38 assists.
Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) was all over the court, posting eight kills on offense to go with a match-high 14 digs on defense.
Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) was also solid in the back row as Northwestern's libero also tallied 14 digs.
Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) had her hand on six of the Eagles' blocks.
Jacki Smith (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) also made her presence known at the net with four blocks.
The Eagles forced Bethany Lutheran into a -.022 attacking percentage as the Vikings had more errors than kills. Vanessa Harkins led Bethany, whose 21-member squad is comprised of 15 freshmen, with five kills. The final kill count was 41-19 in Northwestern's favor.
NWC has now won six straight matches and sits at 12-2 overall (1-0 UMAC). The Eagles will hardly rest after tonight's match, as a triangular with Martin Luther College and Gustavus Adolphus College awaits on Saturday. Northwestern will host the Knights from Martin Luther at 12 p.m. on Saturday before facing Gustavus at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
