Eagles extend win streak to five with victories over Buena Vista, Carleton

PAUL -- The Northwestern College volleyball team had continued success on Day 2 of the Macalester College Invitational, defeating Buena Vista University (25-20, 25-10, 25-19) and Carleton College (25-15, 25-17, 26-24) 3-0 on Saturday.  The Eagles have won five straight matches and currently boast a 9-2 overall record.

In a 10 a.m. match against Buena Vista, Northwestern continued to roll offensively, hitting .258 as a team while earning double-digit kill performances from Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar).  Koth led all players with 17, while King had 13 kills on 19 attempts with just one error to finish with an astounding .632 attacking percentage for the match.  Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had 40 assists on the match as she quarterbacked the Eagles offense from the front row.

Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and King combined for 26 digs in the match as the Eagles held Buena Vista to just 26 kills in three sets. 

Despite having to go into extra innings in the third set against Carleton, Northwestern escaped the match and the tournament having won all of its tournament contests in 3-0 fashion.  The Eagles reached up into the 300s against the Knights, posting a .319 attacking percentage as NWC had 45 kills on 94 attempts.  Koth and Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) both hit double digit kills in the match, with Koth leading the way with 15 and a personal attacking rate of .462.

Katelyn Kostek (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and Bertsch each had 10 digs in the match, while Jacki Smith (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) had her hands on four of the Eagles' five blocks.

For their performances throughout the two-day tournament, King and Stoltz were named to the all-tournament team.

Now 11-2 in 2011, Northwestern returns home to prepare for its UMAC opening weekend on September 23-24. The Eagles will host Bethany Lutheran College on Friday at 7 p.m. before waking up and welcoming Martin Luther College to the Ericksen Center at 12 p.m., followed by Gustavus Adolphus College at approximately 3:30 p.m.
