Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS -- The Northwestern College volleyball team earned its fifth and sixth consecutive victories on Friday, defeating Augsburg College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at a two-day tournament hosted by the Auggies. With the wins, the Eagles improve to 6-1 in 2011.
Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Hibbing) both collected 17 kills as NWC beat Augsburg 3-2 (28-26, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14). Koth easily surpassed the 1,000 kills mark for her career at Northwestern, needing just five kills to surpass the plateau before the match began.
Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) added 14 kills as the Eagles hit .191 as a team behind
Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) 51 assists.
Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and King both posted double-digit digs on defense. Bertsch led all players with 23.
Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) came up big on defense, earning five blocks from her middle blocker position.
In Northwestern's second match of the day, the Eagles outlasted UW-Stevens Point in a five-set match (20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10). NWC didn't have as solid of an offensive performance as it did against Augsburg, but King, Koth and Jonas still combined for 53 kills to go with 58 assists from Stoltz.
King was the match's digs leader this time with 21, with Bertsch following close behind at 18.
After a pair of five-set matches, Northwestern will have to find the energy right away on Saturday morning, as seventh-ranked University of St. Thomas awaits the Eagles for an 11 a.m. match at Augsburg.
