DULUTH, Minn. -- After defeating the University of Minnesota Morris in the first round of the UMAC Tournament on Friday morning, the Northwestern College softball team returned to Kenwood Field in the afternoon, losing to the College of St. Scholastica 4-1 on the Saints' home turf.
St. Scholastica scored one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth to lead 4-0. The Eagles were finally able to get a run on the board in the top of the seventh, but that was all she wrote as NWC slipped into the losers bracket to play Bethany Lutheran College at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) (Barron, Wis./Barron) had the only RBI for NWC on the day as
Leighana Nyquist (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) scored on her groundout. The Eagles were out-hit 7-2 by St. Scholastica, who advances to Saturday's championship game and will need to be beaten twice to be denied a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) threw all six innings for Northwestern, giving up seven hits while striking out four batters. All four of the Saints' runs were earned.
NWC falls to 19-21 on the year and now faces elimination with a loss on Saturday. If the Eagles beat Bethany Lutheran on Saturday morning, they'll face St. Scholastica again at 12 Noon.
