NEW ULM, Minn. -- The Northwestern College baseball team significantly improved its chances of advancing to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament on Friday with a tripleheader sweep over Martin Luther College. Although the Eagles still have one more three-game series left with the conference's regular season champion College of St. Scholastica, NWC is currently in fourth place with a 10-7 UMAC record.
Andy Peterson (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) (Rogers, Minn./Rogers),
Cory Larson (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) all picked up wins from the pitcher's mound as the Eagles won 5-2, 3-0 and 12-5. Even though all three wins were equally important, Larson's outing might have been the most impressive as the freshman threw a seven-inning two hitter in the second game. Larson was backed with 10 hits from the Eagle bats as
Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County),
Monte Abeler (Upsala, Minn./Upsala) (Upsala, Minn./Upsala) and
Taylor Kauweloa (Kailua, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) (Kailua, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) all recorded RBI.
Speaking of Kauweloa, the freshman hit Northwestern's first home run of the year in the third game of the marathon day, scoring himself and Abeler. Kauweloa's stat line for the game included four hits, four RBI and three runs scored, bumping his season's batting average up to .308.
After losing two games in late innings on Monday against Bethany Lutheran, Northwestern posted a comeback of their own in the first contest, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning after trailing 2-1. After
Nick Jones (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) singled in the first run of the frame,
Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) doubled to right center to score Jones. After RBI hits from the Markwith brothers - Zach and Josh - and a solid no-hit seventh for Peterson, the Eagles had a 5-2 victory.
Before NWC faces the Saints in Duluth on Friday and Saturday, they'll gear up with some nonconference action starting on Monday versus Hamline University. The Eagles will host the Pipers in one nine inning game at 4 p.m. at Reynolds Field before welcoming Macalester College to campus for another single game on Tuesday afternoon.
