Eagles struggle to keep up with Presentation in 10-6 loss

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College baseball team became the victim of a three-game sweep on Saturday as Presentation College left Reynolds Field with a 10-6 victory. Despite the Eagles out-hitting their opponents, NWC left 12 men on base throughout the day.

Presentation got things started right away, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Spencer Sudbeck. Northwestern answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame as Josh Markwith (Honolulu, HI/Kalani) (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) hit a double that scored Taylor Kauweloa (Kailua, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) (Kailua, Hawaii/Damien Memorial).

The Saints started to score more throughout the middle innings and NWC couldn't keep up. PC put up two runs in the third, followed by one more in the fourth. The Eagles came within two runs after crossing the plate one time in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but a four-spot by Presentation in the seventh virtually put the game out of reach.

Northwestern didn't have any trouble hitting; the issue was scoring those who were on base. A Brady Ericksen (Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm) single scored Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) followed by a Cody Kielsa (Howard Lake, Minn./Rogers) (Battle Lake, Minn./Rogers) RBI double, but the Eagles still found themselves looking up at the Saints' 9-5 advantage after seven full innings. Each team scored one more run in the ninth and that was it as NWC fell to the Saints for the third straight game, slipping to 5-3 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action in the process.

Andy Peterson (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) struggled on the mound as the freshman gave up five runs on six hits in his first start at Reynolds Field. Josh Englund (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./North) and Olyad Regassa (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South) (Minneapolis, Minn./South) had the same luck in their relief appearances as the staff yielded four doubles while hitting the same number of batters on the day.

Matt Kervin threw six innings for Presentation to earn the win, striking out five in the process.

Josh Markwith (Honolulu, HI/Kalani) led the Eagles with three hits in four at-bats while Kielsa was 2-5 with a pair of RBI. Seven different NWC players had at least two hits on the day.

Northwestern, now 6-11 overall, will go back to the drawing board before playing a single nine-inning game at Crown College on Tuesday followed by a doubleheader against North Central University at Reynolds Field on Thursday.
