Softball emerges from marathon Sunday 3-1

MORRIS, Minn. -- Mother Nature forced the Northwestern College into a jam as the Eagles had to play four consecutive games on Sunday after both Friday and Saturday's doubleheaders were postponed due to weather.  NWC split their first twin bill with Minnesota Morris before sweeping Presentation College.

Morris won the first game 8-3, posting a sixth and seventh inning comeback after trailing Northwestern 3-2.  After tying the game with a run in the fifth inning, the Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the stalemate and give themselves plenty of insurance in the end.  Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) pitched all six innings for Northwestern, giving up eight hits and five earned runs.  Timm didn't get a lot of help from her defense as the Eagles committed five errors in the game.  No one in a NWC uniform tallied more than one hit as Morris out-hit the visitors 8-7.

Northwestern returned to claim a 3-1 victory in the second game of the day, riding the coattails of pitcher Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Brainerd, Minn./Baxter).  Olson gave up just one run, which was unearned, while yielding six hits in seven innings pitched.  Anna Schurch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./North) was a perfect 3-3 at the plate while Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Gray Eagle) went 2-for-3.

NWC was happy to not only have won, but was pleased to take the game in the manner that they did, posting two runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

After the split with Morris, Northwestern moved on to face Presentation for another doubleheader.  Those games came easier to the Eagles, as they won 10-5 and 12-1.

In the 10-5 finale, errors almost doomed NWC again but the Eagles scored seven runs in the final three innings to make a comeback.  Erin Wankerl (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) was the hero of the Purple and Gold's third contest of the day, going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.  Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) was also successful with the bat, finishing with three hits and three RBI. Timm went the distance again from the rubber, striking out seven Saints en route to the victory.

Wrapping up the day, Northwestern scored four runs in the first inning and another eight runs in the third to convincingly beat Presentation 12-1.  Schurch hardly needed all the run support, but happily took to the pitcher's circle with a lead, throwing five innings, striking out six of the 20 batters she faced.  Ruby excelled once again at the plate, finishing the day with a 3-3 mark while tallying two RBI.

NWC emerged from the day with a 10-14 overall record (5-4 UMAC).  The Eagles will have some work to do to get back in contention in the conference standings.  That work will begin right away on Monday with a doubleheader against Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn., which is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
