DULUTH, Minn. -- After going 2-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action the week before, the Northwestern softball team struggled to continue its momentum on Tuesday as the Eagles lost to the College of St. Scholastica 4-0 and 7-3.
While NWC didn't give up any big innings in the first game of the day, the Eagles did allow single runs from St. Scholastica in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. Northwestern kept pace with the Saints in hits, but defensive errors hurt the Purple and Gold, as two of St. Scholastica's runs were unearned. Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) pitched the entire game for Northwestern, giving up seven hits while striking out two. Jen Falk was Timm's opponent from the opposite dugout, allowing five NWC hits. Falk tallied seven Ks on the day.
Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) went 2-3 in the leadoff spot for Northwestern, but was never able to reach home in the game.
Northwestern found runs in the second contest of the day, but 11 St. Scholastica hits led the Saints to a 7-3 victory. St. Scholastica had scored three runs before the Eagles crossed home plate in the third inning. After back-to-back hits from Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) (Barron, Wis./Barron) and Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Gray Eagle) and Sigurdsen scored to bring Northwestern within one run of the lead.
St. Scholastica answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a trio of hits and an error. Each team scored one more run in the game, but NWC couldn't get any closer as the seventh inning ended.
Anna Schurch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) got the nod to pitch Game 2 for Northwestern. The freshman struck out three while allowing 11 hits.
Rodgers went 2-4 at the plate in the second contest while Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) went 2-3 with an RBI.
Now 7-13 on the year (2-3 UMAC), Northwestern will return to the practice field before hitting the road this weekend. The Eagles will face the University of Minnesota, Morris in Morris on Friday before playing Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. on Saturday.
