MINNEAPOLIS -- Playing its first games in Minnesota after a spring break trip that included 11 games in Florida three weeks ago, the Northwestern College softball team dropped a Thursday afternoon doubleheader to Augsburg College by 8-0 and 5-3 scores.

The first game, an 8-0 loss, was over after five innings after the Eagles were out-hit 11-4. Northwestern left six runners on base, while the Auggies brought all but two of their base-runners across home plate. Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Brainerd, Minn./Baxter) pitched four innings for NWC, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.

Northwestern did much better in the second contest despite taking a loss. Down 4-0, the Eagles put all three of their runs on the board in the fifth inning. After Ali Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) earned a walk, Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) and Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) (Barron, Wis./Barron) followed with back-to-back hits to load the bases with no outs. Once on third, Witthus scored on a wild pitch before Lauren Walker (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) and Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) earned RBIs as Borgstrom and Sigurdsen reached home.

Augsburg added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and NWC wasn't able to respond with any more runs as the Eagles slipped to 4-10 on the season. Freshman Anna Schurch (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./North) got the nod to start Game 2, going six innings that included seven hits and three earned runs.

Borgstrom led the team with three hits on the day, going 2-4 in the second contest. Sigurdsen added two hits in three at-bats in the same game while Witthus and Walker each went 1-2 in Game 1.

Northwestern will now shift its attention to next Monday, April 4, when the Eagles are scheduled to host Crown College in both teams' UMAC openers at Reynolds Field. Monday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
