Turnovers haunt Eagles at UW-Superior

Box Score Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Turnovers and rebounds were the difference on Wednesday night as the University of Wisconsin-Superior handed Northwestern College a 75-56 loss. The Eagles committed 27 turnovers while being out-rebounded 56-29 in the game.

UW-Superior didn't take long to establish a scoring margin, as Northwestern found itself down by double digits before 10 minutes had ticked off the clock. A 2-2 tie turned into 11-2 Yellow Jackets lead over the course of four minutes and the home team took off from there, holding a 42-28 advantage at halftime.

Superior's lead increased to 23 points midway through the second half, as Mariah Marcol's layup at the 11:42 mark gave the Yellow Jackets a 58-35 advantage over Northwestern before the final score settled at 75-56.

Northwestern shot well in the first half, making 10 of its 22 baskets, but the Eagles' shooting percentage fell to 31 percent in the second, further jeopardizing their opportunities to get back into the game.

Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) and Becca Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) each made half of their shots, with Madson earning a career-best 14 points in her young campaign, while Kendrick finished with 10 points. Madson had three of the Eagles' seven three-pointers in the game.

Hailey Hart was responsible for much of Superior's offense, collecting 19 points and 13 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.  The Yellow Jackets finished with a 41 percent mark from the field while outscoring NWC 46-12 in the paint and earning 30 points off of turnovers.

Following the loss, Northwestern slides to 1-4 in 2011 and will look to earn its second win on Saturday, when the Eagles host Finlandia University in the Ericksen Center at 1 p.m.
