Despite 0-0 tie, Eagles lose shootout to Morris in UMAC semis

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. – Northwestern College battled to the end with the University of Minnesota, Morris, going two 45 minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods without either team scoring a goal. Technically speaking, Tuesday's game will go into the record books as a 0-0 tie, but the second seeded Cougars will advance to the UMAC Tournament Championship on Saturday after winning a shootout 2-1.

Northwestern, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, got eight shots off in the 110 minutes of action and some of its best opportunities to score a goal came towards the end. Edgar Renteria (Mexico City, Mexico/Brooklyn Center) (Mexico City, Mexico/Brooklyn Center) got a great shot off just before time expired in the second overtime, but Morris goalkeeper Tyler Weber made a diving save to send the end result into the shootout.

Eagles goalkeeper Eric Bocan (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) stopped the Cougars' first three shots from the penalty kick line, while Clayton Athman (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) beat Weber on NWC's third shootout attempt.  Morris' Greg Borchers and Ebrima Badgie made their team's fourth and fifth shots, while Renteria and Larry Sinneh (Monrovia, Liberia/Cathedral)'s attempts didn't pass Weber, giving the home team the right to take on the College of St. Scholastica in Saturday's championship game in Duluth, Minn.

Bocan finished with three saves in regulation to wrap up his sophomore season with a shutout.  Northwestern finishes its 2011 campaign with a 9-8-3 overall record, having gone 8-3-1 in UMAC play.
