ST. PAUL – Friday wasn't a good day for the Northwestern men's soccer team as the Eagles were on the losing side of a 5-0 score with Macalester College. The host-Scots progressively poured on the goals while outshooting NWC 19-4 throughout the 90-minute contest.
Macalester's Chris Kartheiser got things started for the Scots in the game's 22nd minute, as he took a cross from Erik Johnson and headed it past Northwestern's Josh Neidermayer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Morraine). After Macalester led 1-0 at halftime, the home team turned on even more offense, scoring a pair of goals within five minutes in the 50th and 55th minutes courtesy of Reid Usedom and Taylor Rasmussen.
After Stephen Murphy-Logue scored Macalester's fourth goal of the game on a penalty kick at 73:21, the Eagles scored an own goal in the 82nd minute to cap off an already-forgettable game.
Niedermayer had one save amidst four goals in nearly 75 minutes of play before yielding the Eagles' net-minding to Kenny Francis (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul), who gave up a goal with two saves.
NWC, who is still seeking its first win of the season at 0-1-1, will take a couple of days off before hitting the pitch again on Monday afternoon. The University of St. Thomas will host the Eagles in a 4 p.m. Labor Day contest.
