Eagles blaze past Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Northwestern College volleyball team kicked off its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule with a 3-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College on Friday, extending the Eagles' league winning streak to 30. All cylinders were running smoothly in the quick match, as NWC won 25-11, 25-10, 25-14.

Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar), Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) all recorded 13 kills in the match. While Koth's 13 kills were on 24 attempts, King and Sandstrom's offensive performances were off the charts as they compiled attacking percentages of .667 and .522. Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) had 31 assists in the match, setting the Eagles squad nicely for a .372 team hitting percentage, which included a second set mark of .438.

On defense, Sandstrom came up big again with six blocks, five of which were solo. Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) continued to do her thing, leading the match with 17 digs.

The Eagles had 47 total kills compared to just 17 for Bethany Lutheran, who hit -.011.  Klea Swenson had a team-high four kills for BLC, while Marcie Flygare had 10 assists. The Vikings played without all-conference setter Nicole Jones, who was attending a personal matter.

Northwestern will take its UMAC winning streak to New Ulm, Minn. on Saturday where the Eagles will face Martin Luther College. Later in the day on Saturday, Northwestern will play Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Pater, Minn. NWC is 6-9 overall after beginning its conference schedule at 1-0.
