Men's Soccer settles with 1-1 tie with St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Northwestern College men's soccer team came within 52 seconds of recording its first win of the 2010 season on Wednesday. After giving up a goal in the 89th minute, the Eagles and St. Olaf College settled for a double-overtime 1-1 tie.

After a scoreless first half, Northwestern's Sam Mann (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) (St. Paul, Minn./Central) gave the Eagles the lead on an unassisted goal in the game's 64th minute. John Zietlow saved the Oles from a home loss to open the season, scoring on NWC's Josh Niedermayer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) at 89:08 to force the game's end result into overtime.

Neither team was able to score in two 10-minute overtime periods, and the scoreboard read 1-1 after 110 minutes of play.

St. Olaf edged the Eagles in shots, 17-14, while the Oles owned an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks. Niedermayer recorded nine saves amidst the one goal. St. Olaf's Alex Kuehl had four saves to one goal allowed.

Each of the two teams begin their season at 0-0-1 after the tie. The Eagles will play a pair of non-conference games in St. Paul within the next week as they face Macalester College on Friday, Sept. 3 followed by a bout with the University of St. Thomas on Monday, Sept. 6.
