Eagles lose two heartbreakers to St. Kate's

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College was the victim of a pair of seventh-inning comebacks on Monday as St. Catherine University claimed 7-5 and 2-1 victories at Reynolds Field. The Eagles held leads in both games heading into the final inning, but couldn't preserve what would have been a pair of nonconference wins.

In Game 1, St. Kate's scored three runs in the first two innings on a combined four hits. Northwestern stormed back with three runs in the third inning, which was sparked by a Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) home run to lead off the inning. Four batters later, Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) singled up the middle to score Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) and Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery).

Despite the Wildcats scoring a run in the sixth inning, Northwestern's solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames gave the home team a one-run advantage. Leighana Nyquist (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) crossed home in the fifth when Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) reached base on an error before Bogstrom singled to right field in the sixth to score Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin).

St. Kate's scored three runs in the seventh on two hits and a Northwestern error, putting the pressure on the Eagles in the bottom of the frame. NWC was out within four batters, hoping to make adjustments for Game 2 after a 7-5 loss.

Borgstrom finished 3-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Rodgers collected two hits and a pair of RBI.

Ashley Olsen (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) gave up seven runs in the game, but just two of them were earned while the junior struck out four. Rodgers gave it her all in the pitcher's circle in Game 2, pitching a shutout until the final inning.

Northwestern scored its only run of the game on a single by Bicket, scoring Sigurdsen. The Eagle defense held on until the seventh, when St. Catherine crossed the place twice with two outs on the board. With the bases loaded, the Wildcats' Cassie Rooney hit a two-RBI single through the left side. Northwestern went three-up, three-down in the bottom half of the inning, and the Eagles immediately turned their attention to Tuesday's UMAC doubleheader against Martin Luther College.

Of NWC's five hits in the game, no one on the Eagles' roster had more than one. Bicket recorded the team's lone RBI while Rodgers struck out three from the rubber.

At 19-17 (12-6 UMAC), Northwestern will look to rebound against a Martin Luther team that it just beat on Saturday. With a win in Tuesday's twin bill, the Eagles can clinch the No. 2 seed in this weekend's UMAC Postseason Tournament. The first pitch at Reynolds Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
