Softball season comes to an end at UMAC Tournament

DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern College softball team saw its 2010 season come to an end on Sunday as it couldn't hold on to a lead over Northland College in the late innings of the teams' UMAC Tournament semifinal affair. Despite holding a 4-1 lead after five innings, the Eagles gave up eight runs in the final two frames to lose the game 9-4.

After yielding an unearned run in the first inning, Northwestern got back on its feet to score a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) recorded a two-RBI single in the fourth, scoring Alli Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) and Katy Hoppe (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery).

Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) singled to lead off the fifth inning before Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill/Zion-Benton Township) hit a single down the left field line to bring Borgstrom home. Three batters later, BIcket scored on an RBI single by Abbey Eagen (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake).

After cruising through most of the Northland lineup, Eagles pitcher Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Alden) gave up a three-run home run by Asia DeVlaeminck in the top of the sixth inning, which tied the score at 4-4. NWC wasn't able to take advantage of a two-out hit by Borgstrom, meaning the game's end result would be decided in the seventh inning or later.

Three of Northland's four initial batters reached base in the seventh before Brittany Schmitt hit a two-RBI double to break the tie. Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) relieved Timm to try and stop the bleeding, but the LumberJills' Kyle Garing followed with a single shortly thereafter that scored two more runs.

Briana and Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) reached base on a double and fielder's choice to start the Eagles' side of the lineup. Three straight groundouts ended Northwestern's threat and the Eagles' season with the scoreboard reading 9-4 in Northland's favor.

TImm gave up seven earned runs in six and one-third innings pitched, allowing 11 hits and striking out four. Despite giving up a hit in her two-thirds of an inning outing, Olson was not charged with an earned run.

Borgstrom had the Eagles' best performance at the plate, going 3-4 with one run scored. Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), Eagen, and Lokken each recorded two hits on the day with Lokken earning a pair of RBI.

Northwestern finishes its 2010 campaign with a 22-19 overall record after going 14-7 in UMAC play. Behind head coach Alicia du'Monceaux, who finishes her second season as the team's leader, the Eagles improved from 20-23 a year ago to post a plus-.500 record this year. Even more will be on the line in 2011, as the UMAC Tournament champion will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
