Baseball heads to UMAC Tournament after loss to Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northwestern College baseball team backed its way into the 2010 UMAC Baseball Tournament after losing its final regular season game of the 2010 campaign. Northland College scored one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to win the game 6-4.

Northland outhit the Eagles 13-9 while taking advantage of four Northwestern errors to end its season with a victory. Three of those 13 hits came in the first inning, when the LumberJacks scored two runs – thanks much in part to back-to-back doubles to start the game.  After Northland added another run in the third inning, NWC got on the board with a Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) single that scored Cody Durkee (Wilton, N.D./Wilton) (Wilton, N.D./Wilton) in the fifth.

The home team made Northwestern's run a moot point with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles managed to produce some offense in the seventh frame when Durkee hit his second double of the day, scoring Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) in the process. Playing in his final collegiate game, Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) singled up the middle four batters later to score Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) and Durkee.

Northland didn't keep the game tied at 4-4 for long as single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings gave the LumberJacks the win. Four pitchers saw action for Northwestern, including Tyler Campion (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy), who got the nod to start on the mound. Campion went four innings, giving up three runs before Halstensgard, Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and Markwith each yielded a run over the next four innings. Markwith, who had an all-around standout freshman season with his pitching, batting, running and fielding, allowed his first walk of 2010 in his one inning of work.

Northwestern (16-22 overall, 9-12 UMAC) will enter next weekend's four-team conference tournament at Wallace Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn. as the No. 4 seed. The Eagles will draw the regular season champion and tournament host in No. 1 College of St. Scholastica for their first game.
