Eagles start UMAC season at 1-0 after lopsided win over Crown

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- While Wednesday's softball game between Northwestern College and Crown College was both teams' UMAC-opener, the Eagles showed the difference between the top and bottom of the conference in a lopsided 32-3 victory. NWC outhit their opponents 25-4 in a game where six Eagles tallied multiple RBI.

While a five-run first inning for Northwestern seemed like a nice start, things drastically changed from there as the Eagles scored a whopping 18 runs in the second inning to put the game well out of Crown's reach. After NWC put a seven-spot up in the third inning, most of the crowd had left Reynolds Field.

Just two of Northwestern's 14 batters were unable to record a hit in the game. On the flip side, three players, including Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) and Kristin Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) (Barron, Wis./Barron) had three-hit days.

With the Eagles leading 15-0 in the second inning, Abbey Eagen (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) belted a three-run home run over the left field fence to bump Northwestern's advantage to 18. Eagen finished the day with three hits, four RBI, and four runs scored in six at-bats. The only Eagle who had a better day at the plate was Sigurdsen, who returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering an injury on March 8. The freshman finished 3-5 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored.

While Northwestern's bats were putting runs on the board, Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Alden) and Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) were shutting down Crown's offense from the pitcher's circle. Timm struck out six of the 17 batters she faced in four innings, while Rodgers didn't yield a hit in her one inning of work. None of Crown's three runs in the game were earned.

With the win, Northwestern improves to 6-9 on the season and 1-0 in UMAC play. Crown, on the other hand, falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Northwestern's conference schedule will get a lot tougher in a hurry, as Northland College awaits the Eagles on Saturday. Northland fended the Eagles off for second place in the UMAC standings a year ago, so Saturday's doubleheader in Ashland, Wis. will be very important for both teams. The twin bill's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
