Eagles fall short against No. 7 St. Scholastica

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Northwestern played its final game at Reynolds Field for the 2010 season on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the UMAC's first place team in the College of St. Scholastica 12-2.  The Saints, who entered the game as the seventh-best team in the nation, gave the Eagle pitchers a difficult task, amassing 12 hits, three of which were home runs.

11 of St. Scholastica's 12 runs came in just two innings, as the Saints bats came alive in the fourth and fifth innings. Northwestern held their opponents in check with just one run until the fourth, when CSS put a four-spot on the board. Things got worse for the Eagles before getting better, as St. Scholastica added seven more runs in the fifth inning.

Both of Northwestern's runs came in the fifth frame, when Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) homered over the left field wall, scoring he and Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County). Markwith, who was named the UMAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, finished 2-3 at the plate with the Eagles' only RBIs of the game.

Josh Englund (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) shut down St. Scholastica in the sixth and seventh innings, but the damage was too great, as the game was called after the seventh due to a 10-run rule.

Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) got the nod to start on the hill for NWC. The sophomore gave up five runs on four hits in three and one-third innings pitched. Meredith struggled with his control, walking five St. Scholastica batters. Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) didn't have much better luck, as the Saints rallied for five hits and six runs during his one inning of work.

Offensively, Markwith was the only Eagle to record more than one hit. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) finished 1-2 at the plate, while Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) and Dan Harten (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) went 1-3.

Northwestern, now 14-17 overall, is currently in fourth place in the UMAC standings with a 7-8 conference record. The Eagles will have a shot at bumping their conference mark over .500 this coming weekend, when the team travels to Mankato, Minn. to face Bethany Lutheran College. Friday's single nine-inning game is set for 3 p.m. before the two squads will play a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
