ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College baseball team split a Thursday doubleheader with Martin Luther College, winning 6-4 before losing 12-6. Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) earned the victory in the Eagles' Game 1 win.

Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato), Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) and Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) each picked up RBIs in the first game while Markwith, who hurled five and two-thirds innings from the mound, excelled at the plate with three hits.

Four of the Eagles six runs came in the first two innings, when Nelson and Markwith scored after a Martin Luther error allowed Brady Erickson (Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm) (Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm) to reach first base in the first frame. In the second, Long brought Holsman across home plate on a sacrifice fly before Nick Jones (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) scored on a balk.

Holsman's RBI came in the third inning before Martin Luther answered with three runs in the top of the fifth frame. The Knights came within a run of Northwestern with a one-run sixth inning, but the Eagles produced another run in the bottom of the inning. Nelson singled through the right side scoring Markwith, and NWC went on to win 6-4.

After Markwith struck out three while yielding four runs, Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) pitched the final inning and a third for the save.

Game 2 was a bit of a different story for the Eagles, although Northwestern started the same way it did in the first contest with two runs in the first inning. Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) doubled to right field, scoring Long. Nelson followed with an RBI hit of his own to give NWC a 2-0 lead.

Despite one run crossing the plate for Martin Luther in the third, Northwestern's advantage held strong until the fifth, when the Knights scored three runs on four hits. Martin Luther added to their momentum with a six run sixth inning, boosting their run total to 10. The Eagles answered with three runs in the sixth inning, which included an RBI from Kevin Votaw (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson).

Another Eagles run in the bottom of the seventh inning wasn't enough, as Martin Luther's 15 hits produced 12 runs. Northwestern's defense didn't help, as it committed five errors.

Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) finished the game 3-4 at the plate, as did Erickson. Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) pitched four and two-thirds innings to start the game before yielding to Tyler Campion (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha). Neither pitcher had a great outing, as they gave up 10 runs and 14 of Martin Luther's 15 hits combined.

The two teams will battle it out for Friday's rubber match, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
