Eagles dismantle Crown in Wednesday doubleheader

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College softball team collected its seventh and eighth consecutive wins on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Crown College. The Eagles had more than 10 hits in both games en route to winning 22-0 and 12-3.

Wednesday's first game saw Northwestern outhit Crown 15-2 in an abbreviated five inning game. Eagles pitcher Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) held the Storm hitless until the third inning while striking out four batters throughout the game.

At the plate, NWC scored five runs right off the bat in the first inning as Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), Jessica Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin), and Leighana Nyquist (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) all recorded RBI. Following a scoreless second inning, the Eagles loaded more runs onto the scoreboard in the third as errors doomed the Storm. Northwestern's bats were highlighted by Abbey Eagen (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake), who hit her second home run in as many games. Eagen's three-run bomb over the left field fence increased her season RBI total to 21.

The runs kept on increasing for Northwestern when the Eagles put a 10-spot on the board in the fourth inning. While the Eagles did a lot of damage with six hits, Crown's five errors in the inning certainly didn't hurt, as NWC runner after NWC runner crossed home plate. In all, eight of Northwestern's 22 runs in the game were earned.

NWC didn't let a three-run first inning by Crown deter them from a Game 2 win, as once again, the Eagles posted 10 runs in the bottom half of the frame. Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) tripled to left field to score Alli Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian), paving the way for four more Eagles hits. Brittany Johnson (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle), one of four Northwestern freshmen to earn a start, made the most of her opportunity with an RBI single to score Eagen. Ruby and Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) rounded out the inning with back-to-back RBI hits.

Rodgers did her part from the pitcher's circle after that, holding Crown scoreless with just one hit from the second inning on. In the five-inning start, the senior wasn't responsible for any of the Storm's runs while striking out five.

Northwestern scored single runs in the second and third innings, which was more than enough to account for the eight-runs-after-five-innings rule. Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello)' second triple of the game brought Kristen Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) home to account for the 12-3 final score.

Offensively, Rodgers paced the Eagles with five hits on the day to go with six RBI. Sigurdsen and Ruby also tallied three hits on the day, combining for four RBI between the two games.

Northwestern, now 15-12 overall and 8-3 in UMAC play, will take a day off on Wednesday before returning to the Reynolds Field diamond on Thursday when the Eagles are scheduled to host Bethany Lutheran College.  The Vikings entered Wednesday tied for fourth place in the conference standings and would love to knock off NWC to stay in the UMAC's top half. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
