NWC can't contain Bethel bats in loss

Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- After winning two of the three games in its weekend series with Presentation College, the Northwestern College baseball team didn't fare so well in a non-conference game at Bethel University on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were out-hit 20-7 en route to a 14-2 final score.

NWC kept Bethel scoreless until the third inning, when the host-Royals scored two runs on a pair of hits and an error. Things didn't get any better for the Eagle pitchers, as Bethel tacked on six more runs over the next three innings before Northwestern scored its first - and only- runs of the game in the seventh inning. Cody Durkee (Wilton, N.D./Wilton) (Wilton, N.D./Wilton) crossed the plate on an error by the Royals' Buddy Flaherty before Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) brought Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) home on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Down 8-2, NWC yielded six Bethel runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping off the Royals' best offensive performance and one of the Eagles' worst appearances of the 2010 season.

Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) gave up six earned runs in his three-and-a-third innings to start the game before Josh Englund (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) allowed eight runs to cross the plate on 12 hits. Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) finished the game on the hill for Northwestern, yielding one hit in the bottom of the eighth. All three of the Eagle pitchers struggled with control, which was evidenced by four hit batsmen.

Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) and Nick Jones (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) were the only two Eagles to record more than one hit off of Bethel's pitchers. Markwith was 2-4, while Jones went 2-3. The Royals turned two double plays against Northwestern.

Following the loss, NWC falls to 12-15 overall. The Eagles will resume UMAC play on Thursday, when Northwestern hosts Martin Luther College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in St. Paul. Weather permitting, the Eagles and Knights will play another single nine-inning game on Friday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
