Eagle bats produce 20 runs in win over Presentation

Box Score

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- In what seemed more like a football score than that of baseball, Northwestern College defeated Presentation College 20-16 on the diamond in the first of a three-game series on Friday. The Eagles tallied 26 hits and a seven-run third inning to propel themselves to a victory.

After crossing the plate once in each of the first two innings, NWC put a seven-spot on the board in the third frame. Following a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Eagles came back with 11 runs over the next three innings to preserve a victory.

Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) went a perfect 5-5 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored to lead Northwestern, who improved to 11-13 with the win. Halstensgard recorded at least one run batted in with each of his first three hits, including a double to right center brought three runs across the plate in the sixth inning.

Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) was one of three Eagles to record four hits in the game, joining Nick Jones (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) and Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County). Nelson tallied two RBI, while Borud was 4-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. In all, six of Northwestern's nine pitchers had three or more hits on Friday.

Walks haunted Nelson's start on the mound, where the junior allowed eight runs, four of which were earned, on six hits. Borud went the rest of the way, giving up eight more runs but earning the victory in a game that featured a total of 36 runs.

Presentation used three pitchers in the game, who together gave up all 20 earned runs.

The Eagles and Saints will be back at it on Saturday, April 17, when the two teams will play in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
