NWC struggles to contain St. Scholastica in Tuesday doubleheader

ST. PAUL -- The College of St. Scholastica, who currently sits atop the UMAC standings, remained undefeated in conference action this season after taking both games of a doubleheader with Northwestern on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints claimed 3-1 and 12-3 victories.

Northwestern and St. Scholastica were in a deadlock throughout most of the first game, as the score was tied 1-1 until the Saints scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. St. Scholastica's early run came at the Eagles' expense, as the Saints gave NWC trouble with a double steal in the second inning. Northwestern fought back in the third when a single by Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) scored Leighana Nyquist (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato).

After three scoreless innings had passed, St. Scholastica successfully called a double steal again and the Saints broke the tie as Erika Solin crossed the plate. Bonnie Kowalczyk doubled to center field in St. Scholastica's next at-bat to score Kali Carlson and put the pressure on NWC. Erin Wankerl (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./WIllmar) doubled to left field for the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning, but the Eagles couldn't muster up any more offense in the 3-1 final.

Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) worked hard to hold St. Scholastica's bats to minimal scoring as the junior was credited with two earned runs in the pitcher's circle.

Northwestern struggled to take advantage of opportunities in the second game as St. Scholastica ran away with a 12-3 victory. The Eagles had the bases loaded on two separate occasions and were unable to bring a run across the plate in either scenario. St. Scholastica jumped on the board immediately, scoring six runs in the first three innings. In comparison, Northwestern was only able to respond with one run in the second frame, when Abbey Eagen (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) drove in Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello).

St. Scholastica managed to post six runs on four hits in the fourth inning to boost their game's run total to 12. Fans in attendance saw a spark of the Eagles' potential when NWC scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom half of the fourth, but the seventh inning ended with the scoreboard reading 12-3 in CSS's favor.

Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Alden), who was named the UMAC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for two great performances over Crown and Northland, struggled on her home turf against St. Scholastica, giving up six runs on 10 hits in just two and one-third innings pitched. Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) didn't have much luck in the circle either as she took credit for four runs after yielding three walks. Olson pitched the final inning and two-thirds, giving up four hits and two runs.

After going 2-3 at the plate in Game 1, Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) went hitless in the second contest. Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) accounted for two of the team's four hits in the second game, producing one of the Eagles' two RBIs.

Northwestern, who slips to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in UMAC play in 2010, will take to the field again on Friday, April 16 when the Eagles make the long drive to Aberdeen, S.D. to face Presentation College. Friday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
