Game 2 Box Score

ST. PAUL -- After losing to Crown College in the first game of their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader, the Northwestern College Eagles started playing their style of baseball and responded with a Game 2 victory to win the season's three-game series 2-1. Crown used a nine-run fourth inning in Game 1 to win 11-6 before NWC shutout the Storm with a 7-0 score in the second contest.

Northwestern scored the first runs of the game in Game 1 as Nick Jones (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) (Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) and Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) recorded RBIs in the second inning to put the Eagles up 2-0.  Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) pushed the lead to 3-0 when he scored in the bottom of the third inning.

Then came Crown's big fourth inning, when Northwestern could have gotten out of trouble with three runs scored. The Eagle pitchers struggled to find the strike zone though, and the Storm strung six hits together, along with a trio of walks, to produce nine runs.

Kurt Votaw (Coon Rapids, Minn./Hinckley Finlayson) (Coon Rapids, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) brought Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) across the plate on an RBI single in the fifth, but Crown came right back with two runs in the top of the sixth.
The Eagles answered with a two-run seventh inning, but the response wasn't near enough as the Storm won their first UMAC game of the year in 11-6 fashion.

Game 2 was a different story, as Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) used 69 pitches to hold Crown scoreless in seven innings. Markwith, a freshman, gave up just three hits while striking out two, while the Eagles steadily poured on runs to win 7-0.

After a leadoff double down the right field line, Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) scored on a passed ball. Halstensgard crossed home plate a couple of batters later, and Northwestern had a 2-0 lead after an inning of play. Long repeated his double in the second inning, this time scoring Jones as the Eagles' run total increased to three.

Northwestern's leadoff hitter was at it again in the fourth frame as Long tripled to score Borud. One batter later, Long scored on a suicide squeeze by Markwith, making the score 5-0 in the Eagles' favor. Crown's only error in the game hurt the Storm in the sixth, as Northwestern scored a pair of runs on an overthrow to account for the 7-0 final score.

After going 1-5 in Game 1, Long finished the second contest 3-4 with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Jones was also productive at the plate, going 2-3 in the second game with a run scored.

At the day's end, Northwestern's record moved to 10-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Crown stands at 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the UMAC. The Eagles will return to action on Friday, April 16 when they open up a three-game series with Presentation College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
