ASHLAND, Wis. -- The Northwestern College softball team split a doubleheader with Northland College on Saturday afternoon. Northwestern won the first contest 10-8 before losing Game 2 by a 7-6 score.

In the first game, the Eagles overcame a pair of four-run innings by Northland. NWC slowly chipped away at the LumberJills' lead, earning single runs in the second and third innings. Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) singled to score Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) in the second frame before an Abbey Eagen (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) RBI single brought in Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) in the third.

Down 8-2 after four innings, Northwestern scored eight unanswered runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Eagen recorded her second RBI of the day to score Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) before Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) crossed the plate on an error. Errors continued to haunt Northland, as Borgstrom scored on a LumberJills mistake in the sixth.

Northwestern returned to the plate with hot bats in the seventh as Lokken and Kristen Sigurdsen (Barron, Wis./Barron) posted back-to-back singles. With the bases loaded, Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) doubled, bringing two runs across home plate in the process. NWC's next batter, Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), sent a shot over the left field wall to score three more runs. Kelsey Timm (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Aiden) (Iowa Falls, Iowa/Iowa Falls-Alden) closed out the game from the pitcher's circle, and the Eagles went on to win 10-8.

Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) started in the circle for Northwestern, going three innings. Timm followed with an excellent four innings, as the freshman didn't allow a run to pick up her second victory of the week.

Northland was the team to post a come-from-behind win in the second game as Angelena Koosmann singled with two outs to score Stephanie Wilkinson and give the home team a victory. The Eagles held their ground throughout the game though, keeping pace with the LumberJills' offensive performance at the plate.

Down 1-0 in the third inning, NWC posted a three-spot on the scoreboard. After the Eagles were out on their first two at-bats of the inning, Northwestern took advantage of a Northland fielding error. Borgstrom scored on a single by Bicket before Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) hit an RBI single. Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) followed with an RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

Northland followed with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead. After each team scored a run in the fourth, Northwestern scored its fifth run of the game in the fifth inning when Sigurdsen singled Katy Hoppe (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery). Headed into the seventh inning, the Eagles were on the losing end of a 6-5 score before Eagen doubled to right. Ali Witthus (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian), who ran for Eagen, scored on a Sigurdsen double to tie the game at 6-6. With Sigurdsen on third, the NWC grounded out to end the inning before Northland's game-winning single took place in the bottom of the frame to result in a 7-6 final.

Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) hurled all six-and-two-thirds innings for the Eagles, giving up five earned runs.

Several Northwestern players turned in two-hit games, including Bicket and Sigurdsen, who recorded a pair of hits in each game. Since returning to the field after an injury on March 8, Sigurdsen, a freshman, has hit .636 with three doubles and 12 RBI. She currently leads the team with a .440 batting average.

After going 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in the first game, Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) cooled off in the second game, settling for a 1-3 performance with an RBI.

Northwestern, now 7-10 overall and 2-1 in UMAC play, will take a couple days off before hosting the College of St. Scholastica at Reynolds Field on Tuesday, April 13. St. Schlastica, who won the 2009 UMAC regular season championship, was picked by the league's coaches to repeat their title in 2010. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
