MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Northwestern College baseball team played its final indoor games of the 2010 season on Tuesday, winning both contests in a doubleheader with Finlandia University. Northwestern shutout the Lions 4-0 in Game 1 before outscoring Finlandia 4-2 in the second game.

NWC scored right off the bat in the first inning of Game 1, as Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Zach Markwith (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis) (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Louis). The Eagles picked up a pair of runs in the third inning, building their lead to 3-0. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) tripled to center field, scoring Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) in the process. Nelson then scored on an RBI groundout by Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove).

Nelson pulled double duty in the game, throwing all seven innings for Northwestern. The junior yielded five hits while striking out two of the 27 batters he faced.

In Game 2, Northwestern scored first again on an RBI single by Halstensgard, scoring Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) in the top of the third inning. After Finlandia responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, the Eagles answered with a run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

One frame later, Northwestern tallied two runs thanks in part to another Nelson triple that scored Markwith and Long. Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) came in to successfully close out the game on the mound for NWC, and the Eagles recorded their fifth victory of the 2010 season.

Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) hurled six innings for NWC, allowing two runs on three hits to go with four strikeouts. Neither of Meredith's runs were earned.

Following the pair of wins, Northwestern improves to 5-7 overall. The Eagles are scheduled to begin their home schedule this Friday, March 26, when NWC hosts North Central University. That one nine-inning game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
