Gregersen boosts Presentation over Eagles in double overtime

Box Score

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team slipped to fourth place in UMAC standings on Saturday after a hard fought 75-73 double-overtime loss to Presentation College. The Saints' Sara Gregersen made a jumper with seconds remaining, and Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) desperation 3-point attempt missed, resulting in an even longer drive back to St. Paul for the Eagles.

Northwestern started the game with the lead, but Presentation stole the momentum and took a lead of their own halfway through the first period. The Eagles came back to tie the score at 27-27 with 2:32 to play in the half before the Saints finished with a 7-2 run that set NWC back by six points at the break. Northwestern rallied to regain the lead down the stretch of the second half, looking as if the Eagles would be able to close out a victory. Gregersen struck for the first time as the period came to a close, hitting a jump shot as regulation expired, sending the game into overtime.

DeWitt pulled out a trick of her own in the first overtime period, nullifying a three-point Presentation lead with a three-point basket in the final seconds to send the game's result into a second overtime. Gregersen had the last word, as her game-winning shot kept the Saints in the UMAC's top six, meaning Presentation will qualify for the conference postseason tournament.

As was evidenced by the final score, the two teams were even in overall shooting. Turnovers killed Northwestern, who outrebounded their opponents by 20 boards and had 22 second-chance points. Presentation still managed to get more shots off in the game, thanks in part to 22 NWC mistakes.

Both DeWitt and Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) notched double-doubles for Northwestern in the game. DeWitt scored a team-high 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss, while Kendrick was good for 19 and 10. Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) (Greenfield, Minn./Heritage Christian) added 13 rebounds and nine points in the game.

Presentation's Gregersen finished with 28 points, while Becky Smith contributed an even 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Northwestern slips to 12-12 (7-7 UMAC) overall this season, while Presentation inches up to 11-14 (6-8 UMAC).

Speaking of the UMAC Tournament, Northwestern, the No. 4 seed, will host fifth-seeded Martin Luther College on Tuesday night in the Ericksen Center with the winner moving on to Thursday's semifinal and the loser's season coming to a close. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
