Box Score
DULUTH, Minn. -- Despite playing on a rather decent day for a city thats used to its share of colder weather in November, things did not go so well for the Northwestern College football team, who fell to 1-8 after losing to the College of St. Scholastica 10-7. Cole Karsky's 20-yard field goal in the first quarter was the difference as neither team scored after the 11:53 mark of the second period.
Northwestern's only touchdown of the game came from Dan Sunde (Fergus Falls, Minn./Hillcrest Academy), who dove in from two yards out as the clock read 2:59 in the first quarter.
Elijah Buecksler (Farmington, Minn./Rosemount)'s (Farmington, Minn./Rosemount) successful PAT-attempt gave the Eagles a 7-3 lead at the time. NWC's advantage was short lived, as Matt Johnson scored on an eight-yard run six minutes later. Taylor McGinnis' point-after ended the game's scoring despite a lot of football that was left to be played at the University of Minnesota, Duluth's Malosky Stadium.
White the Eagles' rushing game improved from last week's loss to Westminster College, neither Northwestern's air or ground attack was stellar.
Tim Youtzy (Hinton, Iowa/Hinton) (Hinton, Iowa/Hinton), Sunde and
Josh Young (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) combined for 109 yards on 33 carries.
Josh Balzer (Shorview, Minn./Mounds View) (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) struggled to find receivers, completing just nine of his 23 passes for 64 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Johnson's number was called for the majority of St. Scholastica's carries as he earned 107 yards to go with the TD. Alex Thiry was 13 of 22 from the quarterback position for the Saints.
As has been the case most of the season, Northwestern's defense kept its offense in the game.
Joey Bauman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven Murdock Sunburg) (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) led the Eagles with 11 tackeles, followed by
Dave Kleiner (Lakeville, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Lakeville, Minn./Bethany Academy),
Sam Lepa (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) and
David Discher (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn./Andover), who all had eight tackles.
Just one game remains on NWC's schedule as the Eagles will host Martin Luther next Saturday, Nov. 13 at Reynolds Field. Northwestern has finished the season with one win only once in the program's history, which was in its first year, 1973. The Eagles will seek their second win of the 2010 campaign beginning at 1 p.m.
