Luther edges Northwestern in Holiday Inn Tournament finale

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Northwestern came closer to its second victory of the 2010-11 season on Sunday afternoon, but Luther College stood in the way, winning 70-65 at a the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. While the Eagles committed just 14 turnovers in the game, the Norse grabbed 14 more rebounds to win by five points.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) turned in her best performance of the young season, scoring 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds. The senior was 11-22 from the field while also dishing out three assists, bumping her season scoring average to 20.4 points per game. Kristin Sczublewski (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) made four of her five attempts, three of which were behind the three-point line for 11 points, while Tanya Dickey (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) turned in a 12-point performance.

As a team, Northwestern was 25-60 in shot attempts for a 42 percent mark. Luther countered with 44 percent, going 27-61, including 14-26 in the second half. NWC had 13 assists as a team to 14 turnovers, but was on the bottom side of a 43-29 rebounding edge.

Luther had three players in double figures as well, led by Taylor Johnson's 14 points. Sam Jewell had a double-double, scoring 11 points to go with 12 rebounds.

The Eagles will return home for practice before hitting the road again on Tuesday, Nov. 30, when Northwestern travels to Minneapolis to play Augsburg College. That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Si Melby Hall.
