ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College scored the first three points in the NWC Tip-Off Tournament championship game, but the University of Wisconsin-River Falls didn't take long to show those in attendance who was the better team. The Falcons, who edged Simpson College the day before to advance to Saturday's finale, scored 31 straight points before the Eagles could make another basket en route to a 74-43 beating of the tournament's host.
Tiffany Gregorich had another standout performance for River Falls to earn tournament MVP honors. Gregorich finished 4-8 from the field for 14 points to go with four rebounds and four assists to lead her team.
After their scoring drought that lasted over 10 minutes, Northwestern added 11 more points in the half, four of which came from
Emily Henslin (Dodge Center, Minn./Triton) (Dodge Center, Minn./Triton). The senior, who has seen increased action in her senior season under head coach
Aaron Kahl's offensive system, finished with eight points, making all four of her attempts to go with two rebounds in 17 minutes.
While the Falcons had the game within reach after a 45-14 halftime score, Northwestern continued to battle down the stretch in the second period.
Tanya Dickey (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) scored all eight of her points in the half, going 2-4 from behind the three-point arc while Northwestern posted eight assists to six turnovers as a team in the final 20 minutes.
Northwestern's players who had standout performances on Friday --
Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial),
Kristin Sczublewski (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) and
Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) -- all struggled on Saturday. DeWitt, who ultimately led the team with 10 points and six rebounds, went 2 of 13 from the floor. Sczublewski and Myhre combined for just one made basket after each posted double digit points the day before.
DeWitt and
Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood), who scored 10 points in Friday's contest against North Central University, were named to the all-tournament team following the loss. Gregorich was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Maranda Dohrn, who had a double-double against Simpson.
NWC, who falls to 1-2 early in the year, will regroup before travelling east on Tuesday to face another Wisconsin school in UW-Stout. Tip-off in Menomonie, Wis. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
