Eagles stumble against St. Scholastica, Augsburg

ST. PAUL – Coming off of a high from a quick 3-0 win over Northland College on Friday night, Northwestern College struggled to find a flow in its two matches on Saturday as the Eagles lost to the College of St. Scholastica and Augsburg College, both in 3-1 fashion.

Northwestern looked like it was going to give the Saints from St. Scholastica, who won the UMAC regular season championship on Friday night, a solid match. After the Eagles won Set 1, that quickly was not the case though as the Saints came back to win three straight sets.  NWC hit .097 for the match after starting with a .310 rate in the first set.

Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton), Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) all finished with 10 or more kills, with Sandstrom leading the way with 13 on 43 attempts.  St. Scholastica's front line on defense gave the Eagles fits though, as the Saints posted nine blocks in the match.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) had 40 assists for the Eagles, while Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) finished with a team-high 18 digs.  St. Scholastica won the overall kills battle 54-45 while hitting .280 for the match.

Northwestern's woes continued into the second match of the day against Augsburg.  A .577 hitting percentage and a victory in the third set Eagles fans in attendance hope that their team would be able to turn things around.  Augsburg didn't get a chance to watch Northwestern's match with St. Scholastica, but won the 3 p.m. contest in similar fashion, using the block to deter the Eagles' potent offense.

Koth, King and Sandstrom had 11, 10 and nine kills, respectively, for NWC while Kostek posted 35 assists in the match.  Augsburg, who hit .213 for the match, was led by Colleen Ourada and her 13 kills.  Katie Christensen followed close behind with 12 kills of her own.

Northwestern closes out the regular season with a 24-13 record, finishing 11-3 in UMAC play.  The Eagles will surely put in a strong effort in practice next week before hosting the University of Minnesota, Morris in the semifinal round of the UMAC Tournament at the Ericksen Center on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
