Crown's Matson hurts Eagles in 3-2 final

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Crown College's Mark Matson scored a hat trick as the Storm left Reynolds Field with a 3-2 win over Northwestern College on a blistery Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles had the powerful wind at their backs in the second half, but couldn't find that game-tying goal before time expired.

Kellen Arey (Ham Lake, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Ham Lake, Minn./Concordia Academy) and Johnny Defelice (Temuco, Chile/Xenia Christian) (Temuco, Chile/Xenia Christian) scored goals for Northwestern, but Matson's goals in the 7th, 50th and 59th minutes lifted Crown for the victory. The Storm out-shot the Eagles 11-8 while Northwestern held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Josh Niedermayer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Morraine) had two saves for Northwestern while allowing the three goals. On the other side of the field, Crown's Mark Jensen had five saves to two goals.

Northwestern, who falls to 8-8-2 overall and 7-4-1 in UMAC action, drops to fourth place in the conference standings after Bethany Lutheran College beat Martin Luther College on Tuesday. The Eagles will hope to return to the win column this weekend when they host Northland College and the College of St. Scholastica on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game at Reynolds Field is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
