Eagles drop match to Minn.-Morris before sweeping Coe

MORRIS, Minn. – The Northwestern College volleyball team lost its second UMAC match of the year on Friday night before claiming a non-conference victory.  The University of Minnesota, Morris beat the Eagles 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) before NWC regained its composure to beat Coe College in three sets.

Against Minnesota-Morris, the Eagles had one of their worst hitting percentages of the year, tallying 42 kills on 138 attempts for a .109 mark.  On the other side of the court, Morris had less kills but was more successful on offense with a .246 rate.

Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) had a match-high 15 kills to go with a pair of blocks for Northwestern.  Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) added eight kills apiece, but the Eagles' top three hitters all struggled with errors in the match.  Minnesota-Morris answered with Jordan Olerud, who had 10 kills on 18 attempts for a personal attacking percentage of .556.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) paced Northwestern with 35 assists.

On defense, Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) led NWC with 21 digs.  Britta Humphrey had 18 digs for the Cougars, but it was Allie Humphre and Megan Theis' seven blocks that really hurt the Eagles.

Northwestern's match against Coe went much better, as the Eagles won 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12 to leave Morris in better spirits.  NWC posted a much-improved .310 attacking percentage while holding the Kohawks to a .093 rate.  Koth was the Eagles' leader on offense, finishing the match with 14 kills on 19 attempts while Koth added 36 more assists.

Korporal was the only player in the match to post double-digit digs as the senior finished with 12.

At the end of the two matches, Northwestern hopped on its charter bus bound for Aberdeen, S.D. with a 20-11 overall record (8-2 UMAC).  The Eagles will play Presentation College on Saturday before returning home.
