ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The Northwestern College men's soccer team eeked out its first win of the 2009 season on Saturday, handing visiting Northland College a 1-0 loss at Mounds View High School.
After a scoreless first half, Jonathan Blatchley (Ham Lake, MN/St. Francis High School)'s (Ham Lake, Minn./St. Francis) unassisted goal at the 49:51 mark was the difference-maker. The Northwestern defense did the rest, and the Eagles went over a hump they hoped would happen weeks ago.
Goalkeeper Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) earned an easy shutout after the Eagles literally shut out Northland in shots, 16-0. NWC also boasted a 20-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Following the win, the Eagles move to 1-1 in UMAC play and 1-6 overall. Northland falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Northwestern will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 25 when the team makes a trip west to the University of Minnesota-Morris. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
