Baseball ends 2009 campaign at UMAC Tournament

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern College baseball team's season came to a close on Friday as the Eagles lost 12-2 to the College of St. Scholastica in the semifinal round of the UMAC Conference Tournament. Top seeded St. Scholastica, who entered the game as the eighth-best team in all of NCAA Div. III, went on to beat Bethany Lutheran twice to win the tournament championship on Friday night.

St. Scholastica scored seven runs in the first inning, followed by two more in the second to showcase their potential not only in the UMAC, but across America. Northwestern responded with their only two runs of the game in the third inning on two hits and an error by the Saints. After a Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) walk, Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) recorded his record-setting 64th hit of the season to move Long to third. Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) came to the plate two batters later, hitting a double to right field to score both Long and Halstensgard while tallying RBI Nos. 48 and 49 on the season.

The Saints answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, increasing their lead to 10-2. Two more runs from St. Scholastics in the bottom of the sixth did the Eagles in, as NWC couldn't score runs to halt the 10-run rule after seven innings.

Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) struggled to record outs as the Eagles' starter on the mound, and was replaced by Scott Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) after giving up five in the first inning. Swanson yielded three earned runs before Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) finished the final three innings, giving up two runs.

Offensively, Northwestern was outhit 10-7. Long, Halstensgard, Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran), Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), Mike Strickland (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) and Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian) all recorded a hit in the game.

Northwestern finishes the season at 18-24 overall while posting a 10-11 record in UMAC play.
