Baseball completes sweep of Northland

Box Score

ST. PAUL – Northwestern College recorded its first three-game sweep of the season, handing a 6-3 loss to Northland College to wrap up the two-day series. For the second straight day, the Eagles pitched well from the mound while producing timely hits.

NWC got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian) fielder's choice. Sage did some smart running in the ensuing at-bat, successfully attempting a delayed steal to allow Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) to score from third base.

After Northland scored a run in each of the third, fifth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 lead, NWC came back with a three-run seventh inning. After Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) hit an RBI sacrifice fly, Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) hit a two-run home run to give his team a 5-2 advantage.

After singling to right field, Sage was up to his base-running tricks again, as Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored on another delayed steal to give the Eagles another insurance run before winning 6-3.

Tyler Campion (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) pitched five strong innings as Northwestern's starter on the hill, giving up one earned run on six hits. Paul Foster (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) pitched two and two-thirds innings to record the win, while Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) went one and one-third innings for his second save in as many days.

Offensively, Mike Strickland (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) had a strong day at the plate, going 2-3. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) also recorded two hits.

Northwestern has won five straight games to improve its record to 6-10 (4-2 UMAC). The Eagles will take a few days off before returning to the diamond on Tuesday, April 7, when they host Crown College in another UMAC contest. Hamline University will come to Reynolds Field on Wednesday, April 8 for another single nine-inning affair. Both games will feature a 3 p.m. first pitch.
