Eagles extend winning streak to seven

ST PAUL—The Northwestern College (8-10 overall, 5-2 UMAC) baseball team finds itself on a seven-game winning streak as it defeated Crown College (0-12 overall, 0-2 UMAC) in a one-conference, one none-conference double header with finishing scores of 16-9, 8-5.

The Eagles brought the runs in early with seven crossing the plate in the first two innings of play while the Storm posted one. Crown went on a three-inning rally starting in the fifth, brining the score 12-9 in favor of Northwestern before NWC sealed the deal in the eighth with four more runs, finishing the game at 16-9. The Eagles had four errors and left nine runners on base, while Storm had seven errors and only left four on base.

Northwestern ended game one with 16 hits, compared to Crowns nine. Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) was 4-6 at the plate, including four RBI and accounting for four runs in. Both Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) and Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) were 3-5 offensively, while Halstensgard had three RBI. The hits continued as Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) went 3-6 while Kevin Votaw (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) (Hinkley, Minn./Hinkley-Finlayson) went 2-3.

At the mound for five innings was Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy), who gave up two earned runs and finished with four strikeouts.

Game two, which did not count as conference play, had a little bit tighter of a score, landing the Eagles their seventh straight win 8-5. Once again, Northwestern started off in inning one with three runs, while adding three more by the fourth. Crown was able to grab three runs of their own, bringing the score 6-3 in the fourth. The last runs in the game came in the fifth, as each team put two more on the board, ending at 8-5.

The Eagles held themselves to one error in the competition while the Storm had five, including leaving nine runners on base for NWC and 10 for Crown.

The bats stayed alive in game two as Northwestern had 13 hits to the Storms eight. Offensively, Long went 3-4 while Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) and Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) went 2-3. Nelson was 2-4 at the plate along with Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong)'s (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) perfect 3-3 performance.

NWC went through four pitchers in game two, including Scott Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran), who allowed four earned runs and struck out five batters while Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) gave up one earned run and had three strikeouts.

Northwestern, who is now third in the UMAC, will head to New Ulm, Minn. on April 10 and 11 to compete against fourth place standing Martin Luther College.
