Softball posts 12-5 win over Minn.-Morris

Box Score

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northwestern College softball team made the most of its first game at the UMAC crossover tournament, defeating the University of Minnesota, Morris 12-5 on Friday afternoon. The Eagles' second game of the day versus Presentation College was postponed due to inclement weather, and will be made up as part of a tripleheader next Tuesday at Reynolds Field.

Northwestern started the game's scoring immediately in the first inning, as Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) doubled to score Lauren August (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran). Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Shelly MacKinnon (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) followed with RBI hits, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

NWC added four more runs in the second frame as the hits continued to pile up. Ashley Weimer (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) singled before August hit a two-RBI double, scoring Weimer and Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery). After a Kortus double, Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) hit a sacrifice fly to bring August home.

Morris put up a two-spot in the bottom of the second inning, but the Eagles continued to add to their run total. MacKinnon tallied RBIs No. 2 and 3 for the game in the fourth as the team improved its lead to 10-2. Two more NWC runs in the seventh inning equaled a 12-5 finish for an Eagles victory.

Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) pitched all seven innings for Northwestern, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.

Offensively, Kortus finished 4-5 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. August added three hits in the game, while Rodgers, MacKinnon and Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) each collected two hits.

Northwestern, now 13-20 on the season, will face Martin Luther College and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon, weather permitting.
